Pitching Broadcast

Build Trust From The Start

Trying to manage your own PR?

You could write to local television news producers and tell them why your Toothpaste product is the best.

Guess what the producer is doing?

Searching for a Halloween story that will grab locals’ attention. Why? They want to increase their viewership.

Now, imagine if the news producer got your pitch—your email and they clicked it open to find a warm introduction, followed by an irresistible story idea.

Sample Pitch

Hey News Producer,
My name is Brad. Loved your segment on summer fashion trends. I have a story idea your audience will love. It's about the relationships between what we eat and what happens to our teeth? Best part is we share how families can protect themselves.

The sample pitch above conveys an appropriate way to interact with broadcast media.

Keep in mind that it’s easier to pitch a story if a nurtured relationship already exists.

Advice

After watching 2 - 3 segments of a specific media outlet, reach out to the reporter on social media and tell them what you loved about their story.

Ask them what they’re working on next.

Build meaningful relationships long before pitching your story.
